Message 5 of Hi Winslow, I would appreciate it if you refrained from stating "something I'd have expected a gemologist to know" every time I make what you perceive to be a mistake or an omission. Yes, I am a gemologist - and you are not. However, that doesn't make either one of us infallible.
And besides, this is a discussion board, not a gemological discourse, and members should feel free to advance their opinion, and answer questions the best they can, without the annoyance of being chastised in the way that you do it. Message 6 of Ivory can be obtained from the teeth and tusks of a number of animals, walrus, narwhale, etc; There's also a market in Mammoth ivory.
Correct, but how much of ivory comes from mammoths?? I bet the large majority comes from elephants Anyway, in Italy and in many other european countries, ivory can be sold but only if ancient, like in the handle of a sword, and it must be certified that it is ancient. There are some collectors of ancient ivory items, indeed a very very expensive hobby. I am not so sure that ebay does not allow to sell ivory tout court : if you can certify it is an ancient piece, or if you can certify it comes from an animal that died of natural death, it should be possible I would not like it anyway, but that's just my personal opinion.
Daniel PS: the real problem is ebay. There are many ivory items being sold, and sellers state they are ancient, but they usually do not provide a certificate. If you signal them to ebay, ebay will NOT remove them. And ebay will not even inform you about that, raving about a "privacy law" that does not exist the existing law does not work that way.
Message 7 of Advance away, Elias. Nothing would please me more than to see you actually present facts to defend your stated position on the sale of ivory If anyone here feels I've "chastised" them unduly, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Message 8 of PS: the real problem is ebay. Is this in Italy? Because I haven't seen any ivory listed on our U. Message 9 of You haven't seen Ivory listed here? I see bunches of it every day. Of course most don't call it ivory so they can avoid the ban but there is plenty of it listed. Message 10 of So that's what they're doing.
But if it's not listed as such-wouldn't that present an issue if it turns out to be 'faux', bakelite or whatever? Guess you can always return it for a refund. But that gets to be a pain in the butt. I can't speak for others, but I can't usually tell from most photographs whether ivory is genuine. Items that are at least years old are exempt, but you must be able to provide proof of age.
