You need to strip the deck back to its bare wood before oiling. We will recommend using a pressure washer to remove flaking or peeling coatings. This process will also help create better and even coverage. Please remember to treat the ends of the timber with end grain preserver to make sure water does not penetrate the timber, as this can be detrimental to the life of the timber. Once this is done use the process above stated on the Ronseal guide.
If you are looking to add a splash of cloud to your garden wonderland, just use the above processes and you are ready to go! We stock a variety of different colours to make your garden a feast for the eyes, anything from light and demure neutrals to bright and beautiful colours. It is important to inspect your coating every six months to look out for any chips or patches. Re-coat the patch when necessary, for best results we recommend treating the decking area at least once a year! Composite decking has a lifespan of 25—30 years, composite boards are believed to be maintenance free; however, the boards still need some TLC!
Here at eDecks we class composite as a low maintenance board, we recommend keeping the decking as clean as possible, as with any type of decking build-up or dirt or bacteria can be detrimental to the lifespan on the boards. As with any type of decking, we recommend making sure the surface area of the is as clean as possible. To clean composite decking, we advise using Owatrol composite cleaner.
This cleaner is a water-based gel and environmentally friendly; so it is safe to use around plastic pool liner, stone and glass. Please see the below application guide which details how to look after composite decking using Owatrol. Owatrol Compo-Clean Cleaner should be shaken or stirred before application, do not dilute.
Please do not apply in direct sunlight or on hot timber. Always work the entire length of a board to a logical break. On vertical surfaces, clean from bottom to top and rinse from top to bottom to avoid streaking. Apply a thick layer of Owatrol Compo-Clean to the area to be cleaned.
Large areas should be cleaned in smaller sections. Leave the product to work for 5 minutes longer if necessary, depending on the nature of the dirt and contamination. Scrub with a stiff nylon or synthetic brush. However, in our opinion, oiling is the best product for coating your timber deck. It also gives the timber a resistance to moisture build up and UV.
Oils generally turn the timber a darker shade of colour. For example, if you have a new purple heart deck, which is a purple hardwood timber, depending on the look you want to achieve it may be best to weather it for weeks to let the timber silver before staining it to try and achieve a more accurate colour of stain you are trying to achieve. Or better yet, apply a clear coat of oil to your new purple heart decking which will give it all the benefit of being oiled but will still allow the timber to season to an amazing driftwood grey colour.
It is essential to have a clean deck. Before oiling, make sure deck has not been previously treated with stain, paint or oil. If it has, any previous treatment it must be completely removed. Sweep the deck and use a putty knife to clean between the boards. Clean the wood by applying a deck cleaner.
Or use a pressure washer , but if you do, the wood will need two to three days to dry. Sanding this wood releases the toxic arsenic into the air and surrounding soil.
Synthetic brushes are ideal for working a water-based stain into the wood. Natural bristles, on the other hand, are hollow and can lose their rigidity, going limp as they absorb the water in the finish.
Prefer a roller? That lets you apply a thin layer of stain that adheres to wood without pooling. Each type of stain has its advantages, and the type of stain already on your deck will affect your choice. Solid stain plugs up the wood pores, preventing a semitransparent or clear stain from soaking into the wood.
To learn more about the different types of wood stains and how long you can expect them to look good, read Find a Wood Stain That Lasts. Then use long, smooth strokes to stain two or three boards at once. Apply your decking cleaner directly to the wood and start scrubbing it with a scrubbing brush. Rinse off thoroughly with clean water. Using a pressure washer on the minimum level will give you a great finish. Allow the deck boards to dry for at least 24 hours before applying any paint or stain.
If traces of any previous finishes, such as oil and stain, still show, consider using a decking stripper. Brushes are great for fiddly areas, such as between expansion gaps, and so can be a helpful addition to other tools. However, by themselves, they can take a long time to get the job done. To work more quickly, consider a roller.
These allow for greater coverage in one application than a brush and can be fitted with extension poles for ease and comfort.
Like a roller, a paint pad can also be used with a pole and works well applying stain to both grooved and smooth decking. Paint sprayers The ultimate in convenience, a paint sprayer uses less product, and is the quickest choice. Give your chosen deck paint, oil, or stain a really good stir before applying to make sure you get a consistent colour.
Start in the furthest corner to ensure you have an exit path and work your way back from the painted deck. Work along the length of the boards with a generous coating on your brush. Paint three to four boards at a time from one end of a deck board all the way down to the other end. If applying a stain, only apply as much as the wood can easily absorb.
Put some extra paint over any splits or cracks to help fill them in.
