What does he think he is doing, and why? Othello still loves Desdemona, and does not want to see her slaughtered so he decides to smother her. Othello slaps Desdemona because she is not admitting to being unfaithful to him and he is getting increasingly frustrated with her.
He feels as though…. When Desdemona hears the news that she will be leaving Cyprus, she expresses her happiness, whereupon Othello strikes her. Othello does so, only to accuse her of being a false and promiscuous woman. In a conversation with Othello, Iago says that Cassio has confessed to sex with Desdemona. This revelation is too much for Othello, who becomes incoherent and faints.
When Cassio enters, Iago claims that Othello has epilepsy and has had seizures before. While Emilia reveals the truth, Iago repeatedly orders her to remain silent, but she refuses. In an act of guilt and rage, Iago then stabs and murders Emilia. How does Desdemona react on her deathbed? She attempts to kill Othello in self-defense.
Othello grows to meet his downfall when his trusted friend Iago causes him to think that his wife Desdemona is unfaithful. In the beginning of the play, Othello and Desdemona have a strong relationship.
Throughout the play, Iago fools Othello with multiple deceptions that eventually force Othello to think that his lover and wife Desdemona is cheating on him with another. The play exposes the downfall of Othello in stages of overwhelming rage and jealousy, he loses sanity in his own judgements and places virtually all of his faith in others.
He lets his thoughts take over, he loses control of himself and acts on his emotions. He lets his thoughts clutter his mind and good judgment.
Another example would be when Emilia told Othello about Desdemona death, and he admits to murdering his honest wife Desdemona, but says that he killed her because she was untrue to him. Furthermore, Iago manipulates Othello to believe that Desdemona is cheating while the all along she is being truthful about her innocence.
Iago does this to try to gain Othello's trus Iago's intentions are primarily based on revenge on Cassio for taking his position as lieutenant and anger against Othello for not appointing him instead. Though Iago manages to attain the position as lieutenant by setting Cassio up by causing him to sword fight thus getting himself demoted, he is not satisfied not until Othello is punished.
His machinations fell right into place since everyone trusted him and if it was not for Emilia finding and giving Othello's handkerchief to Iago. Similarly, her infatuation with Desdemona whom she thoroughly trusts heightens the notion that Emilia remains dependent on others.
Prior to Emilia's death at the conclusion of this play, Emilia is forced to choose who she truly trusts between the two characters that she has complete faith in. After much introspection Emilia realizes that her husband has been manipulating everyone.
